Beginning in March and continuing until August I’ll be running listening workshops in Shoreham on the south coast of the UK.
"Echoes of Old Shoreham" is a community sound art project that captures and celebrates the rich sonic landscape and cultural heritage of Old Shoreham. This collaborative initiative invites residents to explore their historic surroundings through listening, creating an immersive audio portrait that spans the Shoreham Downs from the Adur valley to Thundersbarrow Hill. Born from the success of a listening workshop during the FOLDS Heritage Festival in September 2024, this project expands on the community's growing interest in their unique aural environment.

At the crossroads of the Weald, the sea, and the coast, Old Shoreham's unique geographic position has shaped its identity throughout history. Through the practice of Deep Listening - attending in as many ways as possible to everything that can possibly be heard - participants will document not just the sounds themselves, but also their perception of the soundscape. This approach recognizes that a soundscape encompasses both the objective sounds and our subjective experience of them.
Through structured workshop sessions and guided field outings, participants will gather a collection of recordings that captures the diverse soundscape of Old Shoreham – from the flowing waters of the river to the subtle sounds of the downland, from wildlife corridors to the bustle of peri-urban settings. This deep listening process creates a window or portal to knowing, allowing participants to experience familiar places in entirely new ways.
